Bai Tu Long Bay consists of a the sea area of Ha Long City, Cam Pha City and Van Don District. Sung Sot Cave
Sung Sot cave is a large cave (about 12.2000 square meters) and has three compartments, the cave’s ceiling has many stalactites. The French was once called this cave Grotte des surprises. The cave’s entrance is about 25 meters above the sea level and hidden under the foliage.
Step through the narrow entrance, visitors will be surprised because the cave is very wide on the inside. Sung Sot Cave is divided into two main areas. The ceiling of the first area is covered by stalactites and stalagmites, which looks like aglow chandeliers.
The first and the second area is connected by a small road. Go through the small road, visitors will reach the second area that is completely different from the first one, which can accommodate thousands of people. Right next to the entrance of the second compartment is statue of a horse made from stone and a long sword. This statue represents an ancient tale of Vietnam. The horse and the sword belonged to Thanh Giong (or Phu Dong Thien Vuong). Thanh Giong was a mythical folk hero of Vietnam’s history who defeated the invaders. After winning, he left the horse and the sword and flew to the sky. It’s said that there are many objects and sceneries in Sung Sot Cave considered as the traces of the fierce battles between Thanh Giong and invaders. The footprints of the horse became small ponds along with crumbled rocks.
The deeper you go inside Sung Sot cave, the more sceneries there are for you to explore. There are many stalactites with different and unique shapes, an old banyan tree, dinosaurs, seabear, etc. Reaching the highest peak of the cave, there’s a big space of royal garden, lakes, some types of trees and birds living there. Also, the cave is often visited by monkeys. They come here to find food. Tourists often amazed by the lively life of living creature in such a cave.
Thien Cung Cave
Thien Cung grotto is located near Dau Go cave, the cave is 25 meters in height. This is considered as the most beautiful cave in Ha Long Bay. Thien Cung cave with a width of 10.000 square meters and has very complex structure, including many compartments with very high ceiling. Especially, in the Thien Cung cave, we see countless blocks and stalagmites with strange shapes. People think of many fictions based on these kinds of stalagmites.
The exit of the cave is a small door. Stepping outside this door, you’ll overlooking a small bay surrounded by a mountain. In the cave, there is also a note on the cliff with the number 1901. Perhaps this is the first explorer’s sign when he found this cave. Nowadays, people have built a system of stairs, beautiful and elaborate corridors both outside and inside the cave with lighting systems for visitors to easily visit the cave. On May 1, 1998, the Thien Cung grotto was officially opened to visitors.
