Monkey Island Halong Bay traveling instructions for tourists

Posted By : Quynh Dang/ 42 0

Reu Island (also known as Monkey Island Halong Bay) has an area of 22ha located about 1km from Vung Duc port (Cam Dong ward, Cam Pha city). Unlike the busy day-to-day changing atmosphere of Cam Pha urban, the rustic Reu island is inhabited by semi-wildlife of more than a thousand monkeys.

The outstanding beauty of Monkey Island Halong Bay

Monkey Island Halong bay is a large island including nearly 400 islands belonging to Cat Ba island. With beautiful natural scenery, Cat Dua Island or Monkey Island Halong Bay has become a highlight of Cat Ba tourism.

This is also the first destination of the tour on Lan Ha Bay. Monkey Island Halong bay is about 1 km away from the Cat Ba town. To get to Monkey Island, tourists usually take a boat from Beo wharf about 10 minutes passing Cai Beo fishing village, some small islands and then proceeding to Monkey Island.

Monkey Island has a circumference of about 3 km. This is a mountainous, sandy island formed by millions of waves and winds bringing sand, rocks, coral, shellfish, shells, shrimps and crabs to the foot of the mountain. You can see sandy beach stretch for miles.

Monkey Island in Cat Ba

Most of the boats and cruises choose this place as their destination so that their passengers can be able to contemplate the beautiful nature of Cat Ba.

Millions of visitors go to Monkey Island Halong Bay each year as they are attracted by its stunning limestone mountains, which are created by the hands of Mother Nature in thousands of years.

Monkey Island Halong Bay is becoming one of the most tourist-attracted places in Cat Ba in general and in Hai Phong in particular, which is bringing a large number of tourists and huge profits to the province.

The island was formerly known as Cat Dua Island as there are a great number of luxurious high pandanus shading around. The fruits of pandanus here looks fairly tasty and fresh, yet they are not eatable. The fishermen here usually pick them up and dig them into water or dehydrate them for the purpose of producing medicines.

The front side are 2 sandy beaches and the back side is like rocky mountain.

Cat Dua Island is also an ideal place for swimming with blue water and white sandy shores. The local residents call Cat Dua Island the Monkey Island Halong bay due to the presence of monkeys.

Almost all of the monkeys in Cat Dua are brought here by the wanderers. They are thus quite bold with the locals and tourists. They even seize food right from tourists’ hands and might bite if provoked. However, it is the untouched uniqueness that makes the island become famous, alluring a large number of tourists going to Cat Ba.

Discovering Monkey Island is definitely one of the most unforgettable experiences in Ha Long bay.

Cat Dua 1 and Cat Dua 2 (situtated on Monkey Island) are two typicial beaches which have an appearance resembling the arc. With the clear, blue and fresh water, Cat Ba 1 is a perfect destination for those who would love to swim and dip into the sea.

More interestingly, visitors can have a chance to contemplate the beauty of the sea in one-floor wooden houses here. Further, tourists are also provided with many kinds of services such as suit rental, buoys and so on.

During summer, the number of visitors going to Cat Ba is usually huge. This island is undoubtedly an ideal destination for a family or a group of friends to visit.

The beach is not crowded and clean

Cat Dua 2 Beach is situated behind the tiger-shaped ledge on the right. The beach has a hundred square meter  garden with a large number of unique fauna and different types of birds.

Going to Monkey Island, most of tourists who are fond of experiencing new things can climb halfway up the mountain, even up to the top of the mountain to admire the stunning panorama of Lan Ha Bay with hundreds of multi-sized islands emerging from the blue water along with white sandy shores from afar.

At present, visitors can go to Monkey Island and stay at Monkey Island Resort on Cat Bai Beach 2.
The resort has 30 rooms built in the style of a roofed bungalow. Each house is equipped with air conditioners, hot shower, television, electric fan and internet, wifi – free internet. This is an ideal place for you to rest, bathe and enjoy the delicious food of the restaurant right next to the beach.

Activities While Cruising to Monkey Island Halong Bay

You can immerse yourself in a wide range of activities on your cruise and off it. From stunning deck views, cooking classes to chatting with fellow travelers.

Exploring Sung Sot Cave

After seeing the huge lines at the cave entrance. This beautifully lit up cave looks so charming and psychedelic that visitors may be drawn to it at first sight.

Kayaking Around Halong Bay

Even though it might be overcast and the water may be cold, kayaking along the bay is so much fun. It is incredible to be able to go right up to the karst formations or even inside caves

Kayaking is a must

Love and motherhood of monkeys on Monkey Island Halong Bay

At present, there are more than 1,000 monkeys on the island, which are short-finned macaques, whose scientific name is Macaca Mulallata, giving birth to about 150 monkeys each year. Monkey usually live in a herd of about 30 – 50 children per flock.

Every Monkey King on the island usually owns 3 to 4 female monkeys, and most female monkeys like to have sexual intercourse with the Monkey King rather than other male monkeys.

Sometimes. there are fierce competitions among male monkeys. They fight with each other. The dominant winner takes charge of protecting the herd and it also has the right to have sexual intercourse with any female monkey that he likes.

Monkey Island Halong Bay traveling instructions for tourists
A mother monkey is breast feeding her child

Vice-captain Nguyen Huy Phuong said: “Monkey mother’s love is like maternity love of human beings. They are ready to die to protect their children”. Then he told us about a heart-wrenching story happening just last year on the island.

When the dog was sleeping, some little monkeys jumped down from the tree and teased him, making the dog angry. The monkeys quickly ran away. Inadvertently, there were two other little monkeys passing by, the dog thought they were the brats so he lunged towards them to bite. The Mother monkey immediately covered her children with her whole body, regardless of how violent the bites were.

When the officers of the island ran to the place where the dog was removed, the mother was bitten to death, but she had managed to protect her children. This brave mother monkey was buried by island officials. “If the unlucky monkey is sick and dead, the mother will still hug her body in her lap. Only when the monkey have become a white skeleton does the mother monkey bury her kid at some trees, “Phuong said.

The lives of those who are devoted to Monkey island Halong bay

At present, there are 14 employees in Monkey Island Halong Bay. There are also 4 married couples and children born on the island. Each couple is provided with a house. The staff on the island often take good care of the monkeys. Although the island is not far away from the mainland, they are rarely on land because it’s their duty to protect the monkeys.

Monkey Island Halong Bay traveling instructions for tourists
The monkeys live in harmony with the local people

Children at the age of five will leave the island to move in with their grandparents on the shore to go to school. Mr. Long laughs: “Fortunately all the children on the island are hard-working and perform well academically.”

So for almost a day wandering on the island, I returned to the mainland on the ship of the fisherman who transported fruit to Monkey island Halong bay. Only a glimpse of the ship docked Vung Duc, with the bustle of Cam Pha City. I looked back to the sea island Rều is only a dim blue but not mixed with the blue sea. There are people who are forgetting the noisy life on land, so that day and night protect the peace of the monkeys for the work of medical rescue.

Sapa Accommodation

Sapa has loads of places to stay with various choices for you to choose. The hotel prices range from the cheapest to the most expensive one.  Most hotels overlook the valley, and feature views of Mount Fansipan and the Hoang Lien mountains, to varying degrees.

Sapa stays cooler than the lowland coastal areas, so few rooms feature air-con or even a fan, but your chief concern, arriving on a cold winter’s day, should be heating — go for a room with a fireplace that works or decent heater. Hotels that don’t offer tours, train tickets, visa arrangements and market trips are rare.

Sapa can get extremely busy, particularly at weekends and peak holiday periods, so if you’ve set your heart on somewhere or don’t fancy trekking around trying to find an available room then book in advance. It’s also worth noting that prices tend to go up at the weekend, promotions in summer are common and hotels can be vague and inconsistent when providing hotel prices, so those cited here should be taken as an approximate guide only.

About

In the remote north-west highlands of Vietnam, Sapa Dragon Hotel is a traditional mountain chalet; complete with stone-hearth fireplace and luxurious Accommodation which is 1,650 metres above sea-level in the Hoang Lien Mountains and close to the Chinese border. Amid spectacular scenery beneath Vietnam’s highest peak, the 3,143-metre Mount Fansipan, the cool, pristine region is home to 6 hill tribes – with tours to their minority villages and markets the highlights of any visit. The region is also emerging as an exciting new trekking destination which is organized by TOM TRAVEL.

Thai Binh Sapa Hotel

Midrange – US$20 to 50

Ham Rong St, at the start of the steps
T: (214) 387 1212

Sapa Accommodation

None of the rooms at this small family-run hotel have views worth talking about, but the rooms are good quality and the location convenient. De-humidifiers are a great idea in damp Sapa, but only few hotels, such as this one, have them.

Rooms here are also equipped with heaters, a small fireplace in the corner and a fan — covering all weather possibilities. You will like this Sapa accommodation.

Topas Ecolodge

Luxury – over US$100

24 Muong Hoa Street, Sapa
T: (214) 3871 331

Topas Ecolodge is a fancypants accommodation option outside Vietnam’s Sapa town, overlooking the valley, and is a perfect choice if you want to savour the scenery from the comfort of a balcony chair. The lodge is located 18 kilometres from Sapa town in the Hoang Lien mountains. Its 25 bungalows sit atop two hills, which jut out into the valley, affording them magnificent views on a clear view.

Boutique Hotel

  • Midrange – US$20 to 50
  • 41 Fansipan St, Sapa
    T: (214) 387 2727

It appears that Boutique Hotel has lost its new wing and now only offers rooms in the original building. That’s a shame, as the new wing was excellent, but the original rooms aren’t bad, they just lack style, a bit like the reception and restaurant area, which are cluttered with a random array of items, including vintage motorbikes.

Rooms look like an attempt has made at adding some character, but it doesn’t quite work. Beds have cheap mattresses and shiny bedding, but rooms are well enough equipped and the views from the front rooms are worth staying for. The restaurant serves up a reasonably priced selection of dishes in a candlelit environment and it’s a good spot for a coffee with a view.

White Lotus

  • Midrange – US$20 to 50
  • 8 Muong Hoa St
    T: (214) 365 8668

Sapa Accommodation

A 2012 addition to Muong Hoa Street, White Lotus is a solid flashpacker/midrange option, even without having any of the views of some of its neighbours. Rooms are spacious and bright with laminate wood flooring – a warmer option than the often used tiles – and modern wooden furnishings.

All rooms come with minibar, a flat screen TV with cable, a heater in winter and air-con. Bathrooms are good, with spacious shower cubicles. All have small balconies, either overlooking Muong Hoa Street or the back – but they’re not good for much other than a sneaky smoke. A buffet breakfast is included in the price and you don’t even have to walk far for a massage as they’re offered in reception in Sapa accommodation.

  • Auberge Hotel
  • Flashpacker – US$10 to 20
  • 7 Muong Hoa
    T: (214) 387 1243

This is a fine old place with a French and English speaking staff, built in the style of many mountain-top retreats from the colonial period. Unfortunately there was work being done on our last visit so the once pretty courtyard was full of rubble and the entrance is now up a grotty stairwell near Mimosa Restaurant — look for the sign on Cau May.

Hopefully this will soon be completed. Ignore the courtyard though as the rooms are worth a look — they’re sparsely but tastefully decorated and a good size, many with a double and single bed, and they all come with air-con, quality bedding, tubs in the bath and big fireplaces. Those on upper floors have great views. Prices are reasonable in the week but jump up considerably at the weekend.

Cat Cat Hotel

  • Flashpacker – US$10 to 20
  • 42 Fansipan Rd
    T: (214) 387 1387

The views aren’t quite as good here as at the neighbouring Cat Cat View, but rooms are slightly better value, staff members are more welcoming and it has a more intimate and homely feel to it. The terrace cafe at the front of reception is a great place to relax and chat with other guests.

Rooms are quite traditional in style but well decorated and comfortable with above average shower bathrooms and TVs. Deluxe rooms are similar but have a computer in room. It’s very popular so book in advance or make sure you head there snappily from the bus in Sapa accommodation.

Cat Cat View Hotel

Midrange – US$20 to 50

46 Fansipan Street
T: (214) 387 1946

The stand-out feature of Cat Cat View is, as the name suggests, the views. They are absolutely amazing. Although the balconies are communal – except for the suite, which has its own private terrace — plenty of seating is ready around. Views are of course better from the higher, more expensive floors.

Rooms are standard fare; simply decorated with splashes of colour, open fireplaces in some rooms, electric blankets and decent bathrooms, some with tubs and rainshowers— it’s the view you’re paying for here. A lift goes up to the seventh floor but it’s still a fair few steps to the top. Breakfast in the seventh floor restaurant is included in the price.

Gem Valley View

Backpacker – Under US$10

The road to Cat Cat
T: (0912) 84 9753

While Cat Cat village itself doesn’t offer any homestay options, a couple of places on the way down provide accommodation if you want to stay out of Sapa town and live the more simple life. Gem Valley View is the first place you’ll come to, about a kilometre past the ticket booth. It’s an art gallery, with some impressive pieces by owner Tran Trong Chien, on display and for sale, and serves up drinks and light meals on a terrace with stunning views across the valley.

Four basic rooms are upstairs, alongside a studio, each containing a mattress with mossie net and a wardrobe. A shared toilet is on the same floor but if you want a hot shower you’ll need to use the bathroom downstairs – it’s a bit of a squeeze but adequate. A good budget option with a pleasant is what makes that sapa accommodation so special.

Pinocchio Hotel

Backpacker – Under US$10

15 Muong Hoa (Pho Cau May)
T: (214) 387 1876

This very popular backpacker option has a good reputation, and deservedly so. Rooms provide a top combination of low prices and good views. Rooms are reasonably spacious, with cable TV, cheerful bedding and basic bathrooms with shower or tub. Some comfortably sleep three so this is a good choice for a group.

A dorm room is also available on the sixth floor with single beds, each with a locker. Better views can get from the higher floors. But with no lift you need to be prepared for a trek. It’s worth it, but stick to the fifth floor as the rooms on the sixth are a bit decrepit (excepting the dorm).  You will like this Sapa accommodation.

There’s plenty of outside balcony space from which to enjoy the view and catch up with old or new friends, although seating’s in short supply. With no fireplaces, tile floors and less than adequate door and window insulation, we’re betting it gets chilly in winter, so bring a jumper and woolly socks.

Sapa Lake View Hotel

Midrange – US$20 to 50

12 Ngu Chi Son St
T: (214) 388 7387

Sapa Accommodation

If you’re not bothered about proximity to Cau May Street, then a hotel overlooking the lake is a good option. It’s peaceful, except for the Sapa minibuses, convenient for the multitude of dining options along Xuan Vien Street. The lake view doesn’t get shrouded with mist like the valley and mountain views from Cau May and Fansipan.

Sapa Lake View is a newly opened hotel along Ngu Chi Son Street. We arrived at lunchtime to check it out, and the smell of cooking – it smelt like liver — was a bit intrusive in reception, but it’s worth pushing on as the rooms are excellent value. Take a room at the front, which will be 100,000 VND more expensive but come with lake views through large windows (though no balcony).

The views are the main reason for staying in the area, so why stare at a back wall? It remains to be seen if the hotel retains its quality as it ages, but for the time being the rooms are very smart: new furniture, big beds, desks, benches and TVs with cable. You will like this Sapa accommodation.

The beds are a bit hard but topped with very fluffy duvets, so you can always sleep on top of them in the summer. Bathrooms are smartly tiled with rainshowers, although are still wet rooms. Price includes breakfast, which you can take on the terrace out front.

Sapa Rooms

Toprange – US$50 to 100

18 Fansipan
T: (214) 650 5228

Sapa Rooms is a socially responsible business, working with local communities and employing staff trained by KOTO in Hanoi. It’s a small hotel, with just six rooms, and the rooms, like the food served in the cafe below, are just delicious. Full of character and alluring touches it’s about as close to boutique as you get in Sapa accommodation, Cha Pa Garden Hotel excepted.

Rooms are well furnished and decorated with handcrafted original artworks. Deluxe rooms are on the small size, but the suites feature an additional single bed and seating. The downsides are that there is no view and the bathrooms are basic and a bit tatty around the edges, but if you’re in the mood for romance this is the place to be. A tasty breakfast is served in the restaurant below.

Sapa Royal View Hotel

Toprange – US$50 to 100

34 Cau May Street
T: (214) 387 2989

Sapa Royal View’s claim to be Sapa’s only boutique hotel is no longer true but it remains an impressive option along Cau May. Rooms are spacious and light and though minimally furnished come with the expected hotel accoutrements: tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, telephone, cable TV and minibar.

Bathrooms have a tub with shower but no curtain: still, it’s better than a wet room… Deluxe rooms have heaps of room and a sweeping view of the valley and superior rooms are spacious enough but only have a city view. Deluxe rooms also come with air-con, just in case of soaring temperatures, and conversely, heated blankets are standard. Buffet breakfast in their smart restaurant is included.

Staffs speak good English and are very sweet. You can book online for a competitive rate. You will like this Sapa accommodation.

Sapa Summit Hotel

Flashpacker – US$10 to 20

T10 Thac Bac, Sapa
T: (214) 387 2545

The Summit is not quite at the summit, but it’s one of the last hotels you’ll find along the road as you climb Thac Bac. It’s popular with tour groups, but with 70 rooms it’s usually possible to snag one as a walk-in, except in peak periods. Despite gloomy hallways rooms are of a very good standard for the price: spotlessly clean, with cable TV, minibar, kettle, balcony and very good bathrooms.

Baguette and Chocolate Cafe and Hotel

Flashpacker – US$10 to 20

Thac Bac, Sapa
T: (214) 387 1766

Part of the Hoa Sua school for disadvantaged youth, the Baguette and Chocolate Hotel is mostly a cafe that has four rooms above for training staff in hotel management. It sits up the road from the town square and craft market in a French-style villa. The rooms are swimming in natural light, with small balconies, but basic in their fittings, although bathrooms have shower cubicles, which is great. You will like this Sapa accommodation.

Green Valley Hotel

Backpacker – Under US$10

45 Muong Hoa (Pho Cau May)
T: (0979) 110 800

It is away down Muong Hoa, about five minutes past Bamboo Sapa Hotel and off the main tourist strip. This Sapa accommodation is a budget option where you might manage to get a last-minute room. Rooms have no special features. They provide twin beds, mossie nets, shower bathrooms, wardrobe and no fans. Also, they have notable signs of damp, but are clean enough and hot water runs around the clock.

11. Bun Bo Nam Bo

Best restaurants in Hanoi Old Quarter

Address: 67 Hang Dieu Street, Old Quarter, Hanoi

Look for a blue awning with red tulips and modern store sign of a darker blue shade along Hang Dieu Street, and you’ll find yourself at a must stop food joint in the city. The modest interior, shared-table furnishing and devil-may-care attitude of this tiny restaurant in Old Quarter may not betray its solid reputation, but the simple fact is this: “Bún Bò Nam Bo” is one of Hanoi’s best and favorite spots for refueling.

The menu here is as small as the place itself, with only a few drinks and five food options available. The obvious choice, of course, is the traditional vermicelli dish the restaurant is named after. The “bún bò nam bo” (Southern-style beef noodle salad)—essentially a delightful concoction of rice noodles, grilled marinated beef, fresh veggies, fish sauce and roasted peanuts—served here is one of the best in the city. And price around $2.70 for a big bowl, you’ll definitely love this dish.

12. Bun Cha Huong Lien

Address: Le Van Huu Street, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi

What happens when Anthony Bourdain and President Obama enjoy a night out in Hanoi? A gastronomic frenzy that yields Obama-inspired meal combos and has Western tourists descending on a local haunt that’s now plastered with vignettes of the iconic moment … whether this is a good or a bad thing remains to be seen. What is clear is this: you cannot leave Hanoi without feasting on Bun Cha Huong Lien’s now world-famous “bun cha” while rubbing elbows with the locals.

This two-story restaurant may overwhelm at first with its frantic atmosphere, its overall messy state and the unceremonious way the servers point you to an empty table and take your order. But once you settle into that large bowl of grilled pork belly and ground pork patties mixed with light rice noodles, fresh herbs and pickled papaya in mouth, with crab meat rolls and a cup of Hanoi beer, you’ll stop caring about anything else surrounding.

13. Cafe Pho Co

Best restaurants in Hanoi Old Quarter

If you’re a coffee lover—or really, even if you’re not—you shouldn’t miss out on the coffee drink wonder that is the Vietnamese iced coffee with milk. It’s a delicious and chocolaty concoction that is one of the Vietnamese cuisine’s greatest joys. A fantastic place to try it is Cafe Pho Co, another Fodor’s Choice recommendation. The fact that this Old Quarter cafe’s entrance is hidden away behind a small store and a narrow hallway, making it slightly hard to find, doesn’t stop both locals and travelers from coming here. In fact, it only complements its paradise-like lobby, which is lush with plants, and decorated with several birdcages and small statues.

Order the Vietnamese iced coffee—or an iced egg coffee or a fruit juice, as they have several types of drinks on offer—and make your way all the way to the fourth floor. There you can sip your delicious drink as you enjoy an amazing and incredibly relaxing view of Sword Lake.

14. Pho Gia Truyen

Best restaurants in Hanoi Old Quarter

To be perfectly honest, Pho Gia Truyen is not the most welcoming place or the most accommodating. But when you consider the line pouring out into the street and the quick and e’fficient way they deliver their “pho”, you’ll quite easily forgive them for those shortcomings. And that’s besides the fact that Pho Gia Truyen”, a pho joint loved by locals and frequented by travelers, makes some of the most wonderful and comforting steaming bowls of pho in the Vietnamese capital. That’s saying a lot considering that pho is easily the most served dish there.

It’s a cash-only type of place whose four-person staff has zero patience for indecisive customers, so it’s absolutely recommended that you already know what you want before getting here. It isn’t hard as there are only three items on offer, all of which are less than $3. Be sure to securee a table first before you order … that is if you’d rather not look for one whilst carrying a hot bowl of soup.

15. Banh Mi 25

There’s an art to making sandwiches, at least as far as Phuong Dong is concerned. The friendly owner of Banh Mì 25, the famous family-run sandwich stand that his very own grandfather started, and his family not only cook the pate and sandwich meats themselves, they also bake their own bread fresh every three hours, the ingredients of which slightly vary depending on Hanoi’s constantly changing weather. It’s a serious matter to Phuong, who believes this is the main reason why his breads are better than anywhere else in the city.

Their spot is completely unassuming, just a roadside one-person stand and three small tables with stools right next to it, but their bread are incredible. The bread is indeed fresh and perfectly baked, the veggies crispy. And each customer gets a free glass of delicious iced tea. It can’t get better than that with such wonderful service!
